The Grass is Green Even On the “Other Side”

When the sun was blazing and grass was drying up, a touching story was shared by Roger Reissig via Facebook. It was of true love and adoration, a knowledge that love still continues after this life. Evidenced by Mr. Reissig’s sacrifice to go out and water his wife's grave twice daily for the last year.

Originally on facebook, the story soon went viral.

Roger gives an account of the awe- inspiring daily routine of his father, a true sprinkler man. What might seem an ordinary task to him, is really an extraordinary act of devotion.   

“It’s been over a year now since Mom left us to go to her Heavenly home. Dad goes out to the grave to visit her twice a day. He has a routine where he clips some roses from his rose garden at home and delivers them to Mom. Then he hooks up a hose and waters her grass twice daily. With the recent drought, and hers being one of only graves getting watered, you can see that Moms stands out from the rest and is very beautiful.” – Roger writes on Facebook.

One scorching summer day while at his wife’s’ grave Mr. Reissig noticed a lady near by with tears in her eyes. He quickly went and offered some words of comfort. He learned that the grave she knelt at held her brother, a SSGT in the US Air Force, who had been taken several years before. After this run in with the family of the soldier, Mr. Reissig, the true sprinkler man, took it upon himself to water the grave of this veteran, everyday as well as his wife’s.

This is just one story of a remarkable man who decided to do something as simple as watering a grave to honor veterans, and loved ones. Though it can be hard to let go, we can always have that love that continues on after this life.

Planning and purchasing the right tools and parts are the keys to success. Keep in mind that putting in an irrigation system usually takes more than one weekend to complete. How to get a green lawn

A green lawn is inviting. It provides a relaxing atmosphere for family and friends or as a playground for kids. The process to getting green grass varies depending on the types of grass you have and your geographical location. Proper lawn care may add value to your home

Choose a variety of grass seeds that will work best in your yard.

• Each type of grass has its own set of instructions based on climate and environment. Some variations of grass prefer shady areas, while others like the sun. Some varieties do better in warm weather, and others like cooler temperatures.

Test your soil for nitrogen, phosphorus, pH levels and other elements with a soil test kit. This will help you determine whether your soil is lacking a necessary ingredient for a green lawn.

• Your lawn may need boosters to create richer soil. Your local lawn care shop should have the boosters you need for a green lawn.
• Providing sufficient nutrients is important to getting green grass. Depending on the elements your soil needs, you may be able to correct problems with fertilizers, which release nutrients over a period of time.
• You don't have to use poisonous or harsh chemicals to fertilize your soil. Humus, organic matter broken down, has the ability to fight weeds, insects and disease, especially when you use the hardier native plants.

Water your grass around the same time each morning. If you recently planted new seed, be sure to water it every day.

• The best time of the day to water your lawn is early in the morning. The water will be less likely to evaporate, and there are generally lower winds. Watering the grass in high wind can cause the grass to dry before the water penetrates the soil.
• For a green lawn, water your grass until the water penetrates at least 6 inches (15.24 cm) deep into the soil.
• Make watering the grass part of your lawn care during the summer. You may need to water the yard at additional times to prevent the grass from drying out.
• Grass needs to be watered about one inch per week. If you use sprinklers, you can place a can in your yard and see how much water filled the can after you water one hour. This will give you the hourly rate of using sprinklers to water your lawn.

If you put a cup of Ammonia (nitrogen source) into a five gallon pail of water and a cup of epsom salts (magnesium sulfate), mix and throw it on your lawn with a cup it will make the grass greener. The Nitrogen stimulates green foliage and the magnesium sulfate makes the foliage retain water so the foliage is thicker and greener. After you throw it on your lawn, hose down the grass to make the chemicals go down into the roots. This is way cheaper than Nitrogen based grass fertilizer and works well on grass.

Mow your lawn 1 day after watering. In doing so, you will help your lawn heal better from the recent cut. This can prevent the tips of the grass from becoming brown.

If you mow your lawn high it will be more durable against drought and against frost.

Aerate your lawn at least once in the spring and again in the fall for a green lawn. The process of aeration makes small holes in the surface of your lawn, allowing water, nutrients and air access to the roots.

• Aeration allows better drainage, which reduces runoff.

The best way to prevent weeds is to plant more grass with seeds. Thick grass chokes out weeds and makes it harder for them to grow or spread within your lawn.

Water Saving and Lawn Care Tips

If you know how to take care of it, your lawn and garden can give you years of enjoyment for surprisingly little effort.

When it comes to watering your yard, you may be able to save yourself some “green” without your lawn turning brown — by using an automatic irrigation system. If that system is correctly designed, installed and maintained, it can keep your landscape looking lush on the least amount of water.

Proper watering is a simple step, but it is one of the most important things you can do to keep your lawn healthy—and experts say a healthy lawn can raise your home’s value by as much as 14 percent. Here are some tips, from gardening expert Paul James, to help you see to it that you’re watering right:

Divide By Zones

Different plants need different amounts of water. Divide your yard into separate irrigation zones so the grass can be watered separately and more frequently than groundcovers, shrubs and trees.

Keep It Balanced

Put measuring cups in various places around your lawn and run the sprinklers for 15 minutes. This will give you an idea of how much water the grass is getting and where. You’re looking for about one to two inches—depending on the soil—evenly distributed. An underground sprinkler system is probably the best way to be sure the lawn is evenly covered.

Waste Not, Want Not

The greatest waste of water comes from applying too much, too often—much of it runs off and is never absorbed. Instead of watering for one long continuous session, try splitting the watering time into shorter periods and take 15-minute breaks in between each session. This will let the water soak in, while minimizing runoff.

Watch The Clock

Water between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m.—when the sun is low, winds are calm and temperatures are cool. Midday watering tends to be less efficient because of water loss due to evaporation and windy conditions during the day. Watering in the evening isn’t a good idea either because leaves can remain wet overnight—an open invitation for fungus to grow. By watering in the morning, you give the leaves a chance to dry out during the day.

Adjust The System to the Season and Be Rain Smart

Adjust your irrigation system as the seasons and weather change. You can also install a shut-off device that automatically detects rain or moisture. These devices are inexpensive and let you take advantage of nature’s free watering service.

Water Only What Grows

if you have an underground sprinkler system, make sure the heads are adjusted properly to avoid watering sidewalks and driveways. A properly adjusted sprinkler head should spray large droplets of water, not a fine mist, to minimize evaporation and wind drift.

Consider Drip

When it comes to watering individual trees, flowerbeds, potted containers or other non-grassy areas, you can apply water directly to the roots with low volume drip irrigation. This will reduce water waste through evaporation or runoff and keep weeds from growing.

Do Routine Inspections

Periodically check your sprinklers to make sure everything is working properly. A clogged head or a torn line can wreak havoc on your landscape and water bill.

To avoid overwatering on an allowed day, "you need to adjust your controller for multiple start times on ... one day." Restuccia said. "Water; let it soak in for an hour. Then, water again. ...

How much water do plants really need? That's probably the most common question asked during this current drought, say the experts, but also the most complicated.

"It all depends on plant type, if its location is in the sun or shade, what type of soil you have, if the property is sloped," Saare-Edmonds said.

That's why it's important to group plants with similar water needs.

Trees growing in a lawn are another issue," she said. "They're getting some water from the lawn (sprinklers), but they really need their own separate irrigation, less often but deeper."

Most water rules exempt drip irrigation. For example, Sacramento limits over-head irrigation (sprinklers) and hand-watering to two days a week. Residents with odd-numbered addresses may water Tuesdays and Saturdays; evens on Wednesdays and Sundays. Drip systems may be run any day.

"Drip systems need to be scheduled very differently," Saare-Edmonds said. "Sprinkler (run) times are measured in gallons per minute (GPM); drip systems run gallons per hour (GPH)."

Converting a sprinkler-based system to drip is easier than you may think. Even turf can be put on drip with grid systems installed under the sod.

Most important, drip systems put water where it's needed: at the roots.

"Instead of losing 35 to 40 percent (of water) to drift or evaporation, a drip system is 90 to 95 percent efficient," Troche said.

"Irrigation technology is getting better and better," Saare-Edmonds said. "There are a lot more options out there." Among those options are "smart" controllers. These take a lot of the guesswork out of deciding when to water.

"They're a little bit of money - usually around $500 - but they adjust water use on a daily basis, taking solar radiation, temperature, humidity and other factors into account," Restuccia said.

Other tools can be added to existing systems. Soil monitors (around $200) measure ground moisture and relay that information to the controller. Weather stations or rain sensors ($200 and up) shut off irrigation when it's not needed.

"I don't see many customers with rain sensors, but they're a good tool," Restuccia said.

These sensors help the controller do its job.

"It all comes back to the controller," Saare-Edmonds said. "It's the brain of your system. Use it."
